Kopi Luwak a.k.a Cat Poo Coffee
Let me introduce you, KOPI LUWAK (bring on the drum rolls!) chng!
From our friendly dearest Mr Wikipedia:
“Kopi is the Indonesian word for coffee, and luwak is a local name of the Asian Palm Civet.
The raw, red coffee berries are part of its normal diet, along with insects, small mammals, small reptiles, eggs and nestlings of birds, and other fruit. The inner bean of the berry is not digested, but it has been proposed that enzymes in the stomach of the civet add to the coffee’s flavor by breaking down the proteins that give coffee its bitter taste. The beans are defecated, still covered in some inner layers of the berry. The beans are washed, and given only a light roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors that develop through the process. Some sources claim that the beans may be regurgitated instead of defecated.”
I came across Kopi Luwak sometimes ago when I watched The Bucket List - see Jack Nicholson mention this in YouTube clip: CLICK HERE.

I met Angie from Wandering Gourmet - foodie bloggers social network for a brief cath up/fairwell at Cafe Noel, Applecross.

I decided to give Kopi Luwak a go because I have many reasons to do so:
1. Sharing an unforgettable moment with a food lover foodie , Angie
2. Being a good citizen and spend the stimulus package given on goods that creates jobs - It cost freaking AUD38 for a cup of coffee T__T! Honestly, it is more likely my belovered boyfriend. *cheecky smile*
[certified world most expensive coffee]
3. My foodie pride was playing up.
4. I love the movie The Bucket List alot! And I wanted to drink the coffee that badly! I’m very emotionally involved.
5. Actually, I just want to do it!
This is me and the Kopi Luwak device.
Please allow me to explain like a pro foodie though I’m not one.
The pseudo Bunsen burner heats up the water in the flask; as the water boils, it travells up to the ‘beaker’ which contains the coffee beans.

Once nearly all the water has travelled up to the beaker, the heat is removed. This instantly reduces the inner pressure of the device and allowes the water to flow back into the flask through a filter paper.
The filter paper filters out the ‘impurities’ - such as coffee grounds.

I was mesmerized by the process. Very interesting and very entertaining.

This is the impurity - coffee ground. Poo wasn’t found. *ermm..*
It smells AWESOME, I tell you!

I was kind enough to allow Angie to take a photo of my coffee.

I too, allowed Angie to sip my coffee - fullfill her very own foodie pride, and she doesn’t even drink coffee at all!

I must say, Kopi Luwak tasted FANTASTIC!!!!! I shall say it again: absolutely FANTASTIC !!!!
Very subtle, just like Lamborghini.

Ah! Another proud unforgettable moment in my life : Certified Kopi Luwak Drinker.
p/s: If I can drink Kopi Luwak, I think snake blood Vodka is not that far if I get to go to VN ![]()
Jesus, since when did I have such gut???

Yeah, I’ve heard of this. They were selling it at Harrods in London last year or something. Also read the wikipedia article on it but have never come across it except in Sarawak, where it can be found brought in from Kalimantan, Indonesia. Okay I’m rambling.
Huai Bin: Serious? This means.. I might be able to find it in MIRI???? Heheh.. you know what I’m thinking.. >.<
haha u found it!!! the world’s most expensive kopi is actually feces of animal lol the irony isnt it? i was once addicted to this expensive kopi then … i found a cheaper alternative … human is also animal rite? LOL!
Wingz: human also mammal .. so I say YES. =) It tasted very very nice, and I didn’t even want to have my cake at the end of the night until the lady boss gave us free ice-cream. If only I could say NO.. I prefer to the Kopi Luwak over the ice-cream for the first time !
where can i buy this luwak animal so i can make my own coffee luwak?
You don’t want this animal for pet, aint you? T___T !!!
Nice. This summer when California Sweet Corn is in season, I’ll make my very own Jagung Luwak
Ed: Please try and lemme know about the aroma and texture. Highly interested.
Awesome work - I hope there experience was a good one!
Grendel: NO REGRETS! If His Ruddness is going to give me another stimulus package, YES! I will definitely do it again!!!!!
You are so funny Cynthia…the things we do for food ay??
Tenina:
hell yeah! I thought chicken feet was the furthest I can go for food.. now I just went off for another.. inch! ops!
wow….am sure it taste great huh….(yeeeee)
Tio: absolutely FANTASTIC!!! The aroma, the taste.. it doesnt called for the world most expensive coffee for nothing! =)
Snake vodka and the cat poo coffee is two totally different thing. you still see snake in the vodka but you don’t see poo in the coffee so they are less scary. I dare you eat Belut = chicks that failed to hatch and die in the egg *think of beak & feather* yikes!
Jessie: REALLY?? is there such thing?? BELUT???? OMG! Thanks for telling me. I know what to do next time. But hey.. it is animal .. poor little chook!
lol You’re really quick. I’m yet to even start blogging on everything I did the past week!
Although I’ll never drink coffee again, I’m glad I tried it… just to say that I had. :p
Angie: Oh! I had to do this post. It is def one unforgettable moment! the sh*t is potent! I had sleep problem .. didnt get to sleep for 24 hours!!!
Good thing you had to stay up to speak to the Dutch people then eh?
pffft. don’t even mention T_T
Is Huai Bin telling the truth or not? I also want to try Kopi Luwak. Hopefully I can find it in Kuching.
Choonie: Hey! Haha! I’m not entirely sure the supply in Kuching/Miri.. But I know it can’t be found in Bali either, apparently it get ordered from Jakarta, according to my colleage.
If I happend to go back to Miri, I will try and look for it!!
Mmm sounds good. I wouldn’t mind trying some but $38 for a cup is pricey! Proud of you my fellow foodie.
Di : only once.. for now
It is worthy!!
