Happy Chinese New Year– Home Alone version

I wasn’t thinking of celebrating Chinese New Year. In fact, there was no one at home to celebrate with. I didnt get off from work till 12pm and Megan (my colleage) asked me out for a drink in town at the famous white beer pub. After 2 hours of ‘beer-under-sunshine’ session, I decided to do something for CNY.After all, I am Malaysian and we celebrate everything–CNY, Raya Aidilfitri, Deevapali and X’mas!! =)

I rushed to local Post Office, bought this Lunar New Year Zodia Sheetlet. =) I had a Rooster one from last year.

I sent out few copies of postcards.. Last minute effort…as usual…Malaysian style.

I received a card from a good friend of mine who is currently working as a DJ in 988 radio station Malaysia. Cool. It has been awhile.
I’ve got another classic chinese card from Chin Beng koko (brother), another old friend of mine. We used to write to each other. I still keep those letters he sent me.. 200++ letters all together =)
Before the shops close, I managed to get some ‘Chinese’ stuffs. All of a sudden, I wanted to decorate my house! I bought a box of tissue paper! A red flowerish box!! So Chinese-New-Year… *smile*

Oh well, I am not sure whether it was a true smile from my heart.. or just a way to suppress my tears from falling off and the feeling of missing everyone at home, especially my lovely parents. Every year at this time, mum and dad will make sure we are all ready for the celebrations, getting everything organised–reunion dinner, prayers, new (red) clothes, dusting or sweeping the floor… I have been doing all this as routine since I was little.. I quite miss them now, but what I miss the most at the moment is the entire time I spend with my family while preparing for the special event. Mum, as usual, she is the one that nag and nag and nags… ;) Dad doesn’t say much and is usually on our side. =)

For some reasons, my aunty, my grandma will buy a new set of cooking ingredients like sesame oil, oyster sauce. I am not quite sure why. New thing for new year? I, too bought few of them whether or not for CNY sake =) I bought dried fungus, mushroom and clear vermicilli. Hmm, at this stage, I am still not sure if I will go on vegetarian food. I dont know who to cook those Teow Chew style of vegetarian food thou. I miss my grandma’s cooking. She makes fabulous Teow Chew dishes! Aw mannnn!!!! Fly me home now!!!
I bougt some YEO’S Chrysanthemum Tea!!!! Not that I need extra sugar, just that I miss the routine of having sugarish drink on CNY, and dad can’t ‘prohibit’ us from drinking them. =) Bah! don’t feel like drinking it much. CNY home alone suX! I put up my own reunion dinner. My guest of my reunion dinner is me. Just me. I tried not to cry and be cheerful as much as possible. I use my imagination to ‘decorate’ my dinning table. Thinking of dad and mum, they crack funny jokes all the time. My brothers constantly helping himself with chunky chicken drimstick and always wanting to head out with his buddies after dinner. Me and my sister, on the other hand, helping ourselves with more longan dessert drink more than anything else. =) I had couple of king prawns, chicken and fresh salmon! And my family smiles, jokes, voice… are constantly ‘playing’ in my mind.. Well, if you are going to ask me, “how’s your reunion dinner?”

My answer is: AWESOME!! (as usual)

Oh well, I think this is life. One year comes, another year gone…..

Oh yeah, I got a phone call at 12am from Kian, calling from Adelaide.
“Baby, can you please go to the bookshelf, look for Merck Mannual”
“What?” stone-stone me. =)
Ok.. I got up.. looking around the book, I found an Ang Pow (red-packet).
“You see the ‘ang pow’ there?”
“Yeah.. woOOOOw!! inside got one big stack colourful Malaysian Ringgit somemore, honey. Eh! you forgotten to bring to Adelaide?” eye opened super big, try to count how much… “Fattt Tatt” loh! ekekek.
“No! It is for you one! the ang-pow is yours!”
“Me? No!! ney… you havent even get married yet!!”
=_=”’

It is nearly 11am. I am going out soon, buy a new gold fish =)

Oh yeah! Before I forget, Wish you all a very HAPPY, PROSPEROUS and HEALTHY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!!!

Lotsa love,

Cynthia

Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

Today is Australia Day. I went to Mill Point (South Perth) to join those bloody aussie to watch the skyworks(fireworks).
Hmmm… Australia~ ! I can assure you if you see how those aussies celebrate their National Day, I bet you will shock till your dead! Maybe not, but at least, to certain extend, your heart beats will drop half.

From what I can recall, 31th August Malaysia National Day is celebrated in rather very patriotic way; we have lotsa lotsa ppl go marching around in town, salute to Agong (King), we watch Tunku Abdul Rahman announced Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! in ‘Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah’.

In Australia.. they are rather way pathetic when come to celebrate National Day. Oh well, This is my personal thinking lah…maybe I am still very Malaysian, very Chinese, I still cannot accept some kind of new ‘culture’. My bad. ok? =P

First, let me introduce you…. Aussie hot chicks in aussie bikini. Wah LAU yeEh!! You think what? You think Malaysians can do this meh? If you do this, hello! That Police DiRaja Malaysia will stand infront your house already loh! AIyah, I dont know lah. Like I said, I am still very conservative when come to National Flags… No play play =)
I think Asutralia is very pseudo-UK, very semi-America. They dont really have their culture. No icon.

If you ask those aunties and uncles “eh! what you think about ‘Ou Chew’ (australia)?” I bet their answer is gonna be like this:- Oh!! Got Kangarooooo, and the
Coca Cola bear …and the local people like to smoke in didgerido. Nah, this one, I am just kidding. But the joke is 100% right.

See, if you are aussie, you can use the flag as ’sarung’ some more. In Malaysia.. you dream lah! wahaahahh

Australia is sunny country especially in Summer like this. This is true. Hot day with high UV. And! Under this pipping hot weather, it is not hard to spot high-tempered mother yelled at her kid: You fxxking come back here, mate! Or else I will fxxking angry… fxxk you!

Australia!! How cool is that?

Oh, I wonder how much Australia Day mean to them? Aussies love their sizzling sausages and beer. If you were one of them? Does Australia Day (public holiday) is the licence for them to get more alcohol and more beer…and more aussie??? EH! This is none of your business, Cynthia, you are Malaysian, remember!? Not Australian. =)
Oh! Oh! Aussie like to wear yeallow-and-green shirt and always apply zinc or thick sunblock in their face like these blokes. They all wanna look like Shane Warne. So pathetic.
Aussies like cricket. Tell you! this is something ALL Aussie always proud of: they are always in the hot seat of World Cricket Championship! See!! How wicked is that? And guess what? How many countries that are actually in this game?

1. England 2. Sri-Lanka 3. Pakistan 4.India 5. New Zealand 6. South Africa 7. AUSTRALIA!!! Bloody seven countries in so-called world cup? LOL
Australia~~!!!!!

Haih!!!

I was tagged by Dr Chen. Wah Lau~! Seven Morning Eight Morning.. =) Aiks.. I think I better do it fast, at least before CNY, so that I dont owe people. Oh well, I am Chinese, so I have the license to be superstitious.

I watched Pride and Prejudice last night. Great Lord! Most of the time, I dont understand what the heck of English they are talking. Classic words, flowerish conversation… Consequently which make me feel like my English is “sibeh” (Hokkien=damn) suX. All I know is “Mr Darcy, Miss Benette…” Therefore, I bought the book! and many many more… =)

    Tokking kOoooOk

I use alot of chicken in my cooking. Well, I do fancy pork, but those pork sold in local aussie supermarket smell and taste weird. Why? I am not sure if this is a real fact, but according to my friend’s friend’s friend’s uncle, the pigs in Australia are not castrated, so they stink! Yet, the pork that available in Asian butcher taste and smell ‘normal’ — just like what we Chinese like. Again, travelling all the way to town just to get few kilos of pork is not something I would do =)

These are the chicken dishes that I’ve been cooking in the past 2 weeks. Hope you will like ‘em.
    Enjoy~!!

    1.) Clayport chicken rice.
This is a very generic version of clayport chicken rice. I use chicken breast meat and mushroom, plus ginger as flavoring. It was spontaneous idea of my friend, Jo. I cooked the chicken, mushroom and ginger in sesame oil. Then, I added uncooked rice. Maximum heat, stir fried for few minutes. Afterwards, transferer everything into microwave and boil it.
Ok, I must admit I dont know how to use rice-cooker to boil rice. I use microwave thru’out the time. =P
There are no salted fish pieces and chinese sausage (chinese salami) in this dish. I dont usually use salted fish; plus we all are not a big fane of chinese salami =)

    2.) Soya Ginger Chicken
In order to get the full flavor of both chicken, I prefer using chicken that come with bones. In this case, I use chicken wings.
This is a rather simple dish. The chicken wings are marinated in slight excessive light soya sauce for 20 mintues.
Heat the frying pan, add some sesame oil. Next, the pre-marinated chicken wings are added. At this point, I added half cup of water; turn the heat to the max point; boiling water/sauce aids cooking the chicken. Give the chicken a stir every few minutes, so that they are evenly cooked.
They are ready to serve when the sauce are reduced to nearly half. Soya sauce or a bit of salt can be added in case it is over-diluted =)

    3.) Chicken stir-fry with vegetable.
Ingredients: chicken breast meat, cut into cube; carrot and broccoli. Ginger is a preference. Carrot and broccoli are lightly steammed/boiled. Garlic are stir-fried with some oil in heated frying pan. Cubbed chicken breast meat are added and stir-fry till about half cooked. Oyster sauce and soya sauce are added. Keep stir fry. This allow infusion of the sauce to the meat. Add vege. If the sauce is too salty, some watercan be added. Viscosity of sauce can be increased by adding a small amount of corn-flour solution.

    4.) Onion Chicken Egg Omelette.

Oh, this one easy. Anyone can do this =) Pre stir fry onion, and then added into uncooked beated eggs. Blah blah blah.. told you! it is easy! =P

5.) My psedo-version of Hainamese Chicken Rice.
My favorite part of cooking is making soup. Ingredients: chicken thighs (with bones) , chinese cabbage ( this is what aussie calls), black whole pepper, ginger, few whole garlic, salt. Chicken stock, if required.

Add everything into soup pot. =) Temperature must be looked after from time to time. I use low heat to make soup most of the time. It takes hours. It is abit long, but if you get the temperature right, the chicken meat will be infused with full flavour without the aid of MSG. LOLMisc: Oily chicken rice

Excessive of chicken soup can be used to replace water in boiling rice. Some people like to utilise the fat layer of the soup. For healthy sake, I normally remove the fat layer and replace the fat with olive oil-butter/marjerin. Few clove of garlic are added to enhance the flavour. Bring to boil. And ready to serve =)

    Chicken Little–*kook koook kooook*

We drove up to Innalo Greater Union all the way just to watch 3D Chicken Little. Half an hour drive. How crazy is that? Turns out, the movie last about an hour plus.

The story is ok ok only. I see alot of other movies shadow, such as Signs, War of the Worlds.. But Chicken Little is cute! =) No regret. At least… we all got the Chicken Little 3D glass!! HAhaa!!

    I dont , and I never mean that =)

haha!! what you looking at dude??

    Me and Kian.

Constipated us in Chicken Little’s glass.. I need more Benefiber

I must say self-taking picture is quite hard for me.. i need longer arm =)

    Robert and Jo

Sorry guys, this is a crapy post. I’m a bit tired. But at least I feed you some funcky pictures =)

Have a good week ahead, and… Don’t work toooo hard! =)

    Blood Donation

Ta Dah!!!! I gave blood yesterday. This is my 8th (?) or more donations since I arrived in Australia. I am frequent donor. I am kinda lost count here. Hmmm..at least 2-3 times a year. *whatever*. Doesn’t matter.

I gave standard 470mL of A+ blood; it took 6 min 10 sec to bleed out everything. Cool ah! The nurse said my blood flow like spring water. =) Oh well, mustta take credit for that. I had a heavy meal plus 4 jumbo glass of water. Of course, they bleed well =)

Blood Donation Center gave me a sticker “Be nice to me… I gave blood Today”. This is a licence for me to remind Kian and friends to be EXTRA nice to me. But, I don’t think the are really listening. I wanted to have roast duck, but they all wanted to go somewhere else! Hey! I gave blood, dude! Be nice to me… =(

(I think this is the problem when I donate too much blood, they just seem dont care much anymore. mmHmm.. )
Uh Uh Uh!! Australia Red Cross gave me some finger food. I love the cheese and cracker the best. I wanted Kit Kat, but they gave me Mars bar instead. (where got such thing as “be nice to me”?) I used to get these heavy buttered short-bread with “Thank You” printing on it, but apprently, they just give a normal short-bread. Hmm.. not nice at all. Anyway, it doesnt matter at all. I didn’t actually want to take these food home, but the nurse insisted me to bring them with me. Oh! how sweet was she =)

The nurse reminded me “No house works, no cooking! You gonna sit back, and watch tv.”
“Ok.. cheers!! ah! we have good weather today.. how bout golf?”
“Don’t you ever think about it, young lady!!” I can see the nurse looking at me, with dilated pupils in her big eyes.
    *shy*

    Oh yeah!

Kian made a brain-striking statement : Blood donation indeed is a selfish act … like you just want to make yourself feel better.

    Is that right??????? *big question*

I used to feel extraordinary fabulous when I started giving blood. I used to think it was a big deal. Bah!! But, not now, not anymore. It was just bloody 470mL A+. It is nothing.

So therefore, I try to brush off my “ego-ism” by turning the donation into routine, and let the extraordinary become ordinary.

    *amitaba*

    Home Work- 5 meme(?)

I kena tagged. Kian asked me: “what?”
    Yeah..same question in my mind..”what?” ;)
Never mind. Last time I got tagged, but I chickened out. Not really chicken, chicken thing. I pretend I had forgotten. I was too lazy. Too slack to read and revise, and trace back… Apparently Dr. Chen tags me, again. This 5 meme is way easier. =) But I am going to skip the very first and last bits. I am still slack, but not that much, anymore.

    Gloria Jean’s Coffees

Thru’out the whole seasons in Perth, if you cant find me at home, or probably in the park where I normally go for a jog, perhaps in Burswood golf course (recently)… if you can not get me from Jo’s house… then the only place I would say is GJ coffee shop, Victoria Park– where a typical caffeine addict like me hang out and read free magazine. =)

I need coffee as much as I need white rice and noodle. Honestly speaking, I cant survive without caffeine. If you in my shoe, or if you are a smoker, then you know what I mean when I try to define “addiction”. Hmm.. very bad. I know.

GJ sells a wide range of cakes and pastries. Well, I am not a big fan of their solid food. Occasionally, I like to have a slice of cake.

Tried Cookie and Cream Fudge the other day. Oreo cookie crumb…oh! you gotta love it. Sinful, yet delicious.

I am quite particular when I come to coffee. It has to be strong, enough taste.

I like latte, but sometimes I think the milk content is a bit too much. Don’t really fancy cappacino. I felt cheated when I order it; the shop girls make awkful lot of froth yet the coffee and milk content not even 3/4 of the volume of the cup. Plus, I am definitely not those female who like to stick their tongue out (long long), licking the froth on the spoon, and try to act like a sexy *whatever*. Pay caffeine some respect, dude =)

I love expresso the most, just like I love my chinese Pu-Er tea. Old, flavorish and strong in taste.

How many sugar(s) in my coffee??

Never add any. Not even one. Sugar kills the taste of coffee and…. I think

    I am sweeeet enough. =P

    Soupy Summer

We are experiencing cold summer thesedays. It is abit weird. Summer dont normally rain.. Anyway, it does not really matter to me. I am typical Chinese who just love my soup =) Blime, I can slurp those hot soup even when the temperature rises till 44 degree celcius.

Today..Let me present you my ABC soup!
Hello! Give face a bit, can ah? *smile*… and applause ;P

This is rather simple dish. Ingredients used are skinless chicken, potato, carrot and onion. A little bit of salt. Cooking method? Even easier: ‘throw’ everything in the pot, add water, and bring to boil.

Oh yeah, Chinese loves white rice as well.. =P

    Welcome 2006!

Holy moly! It is 2006. I just cant belive it. Whatever happend yesterday, it was actually happend last year. I’m glad I am still alive, I am still breathing… *phew* Perth Trainstation

I called home just now; mum was very busy working in the shop. I scared she got annoyed if I am just going to say “mummy,新年快樂 (happy new year)!!” So I added “mummy, wish you 青春美麗 (always beutiful)!” I am a sukker. A good one ;)

We went to Matilda Bay. We had potluck picnic. Gosh, the amount of food wasnt that much… But I am just sooo fulled. Ok, I am going for colon cleansing for the whole week. More water, vege and fruit. I cant eat too much. I gotta prevent myself from food toxification/overload.

I miss my dad. I havent spoken to him since last night. I tried to call him, but the network was busy. Or he was probably busy shaking his arse and head off in the club.

I have a quite New Year. Love it. Not too heavy, not too light. It is ALL good. =)

How’s your New Year celebration? Did you party (too) hard?

anyway.. Would you excuse me? I am going out for a jog now–my very very first thing I want to do for New Year =P
